Most days I’m content to look the other way at the filth I see being slung around our industry.

Not that it doesn’t make me curse at my screen – it does. 

It’s just that you gotta choose where to put your energy, and I choose to put it into the people who’ve already trusted me to guide their careers. 

But, today I’m throwing the gloves off and coming in bare-knuckle to expose these asshats. 

Because the truth is: 

There’s a Big, Nasty LIE you’re being told about what it takes to succeed as a freelance copywriter. 

This LIE is meant to mire you in insecurity and dependence on the people spreading them so that you will feel like you always NEED them to get paid for your writing talent.

To put it bluntly: it’s complete bullshit. And I’m tired of seeing good people fall prey to their manipulative schemes to keep you hungry and desperate for help. 

Don’t believe me?

Have you noticed that when you buy one program that promises you the moon… that their magic solution is finally the “easy” way to land good clients… that some overnight guru has the secret to getting paid “ten grand a month” for an hour of work per day… yada, yada…

And (shocker!) that program does nothing to help you do any of that…

They conveniently have a next-level program that they promise will actually help you do it a different way?

Imagine that!  

You gotta admit, it’s a smart sales model. 

The more they trick you into thinking you can’t do this on your own, the longer you keep paying them. 

This “dependence scheme” works great for their bottom line. 

But, you’re the one who suffers.

Worse than the money the victims of this scheme are throwing away, is the wasted months or years they will never get back.

It not only puts mental and financial stress on you, but it’s also brutal for the people counting on you to make this copywriting thing work.

Do you know the #1 reason freelancers quit
and go back to a “real job?” 

It’s not their own fatigue (people who make it in copywriting are typically very energized)… No, what most often forces them to quit is the pressure they feel to provide for their families. 

That’s why the “bro culture” is so dominant in many of these programs.

Think about it. 

If you’re a young dude living on the cheap, then you can afford to spend years stroking yourself for “being in the club.”

However, if you – and the people you care most about – are counting on this to make this work… 

The stakes are much higher. 

The part that angers me the most about these schemes is the mental torture unknowing copywriters suffer as a result of faithfully following their methods. 

It’s a shitty thing to do to someone, and the people who use them know they’re doing it.

If you press them about it (as I have), they’ll try to justify it. 

Saying things like, “That’s just how marketing is… you have to promise them what they think they want.”

Yes, that is a proven principle of direct response marketing. It’s our job to identify the core desires of our market and enter the conversation happening inside their heads.

Nothing wrong with that, so long as you have a PROVEN solution to their struggles.

The problem is when that same philosophy of manipulation carries throughout their entire program. 

They keep selling and (half-ass) delivering what they’ve trained you to think you want and need, with the sole intention of upselling you to the next thing, and the next.

Whether that’s because they are lousy people, or they just “don’t know what they don’t know” yet… the result is the same for the people who trust them.

I’m here to tell you, it doesn’t have to be that way. 

In fact, in the more than eight years that I’ve been coaching and connecting freelance copywriters, I’ve seen more lives change for the better using the same exact tactics I started teaching on day one. 

In the frenzied world of DR marketing, I’m proud of that consistency. 

It should be something you demand from any program you invest in. 

If you’re skeptical – good! You should scrutinize every claim you see, now more than ever.
