“I thought about freelancing every day…”
Allison worked full-time at a marketing startup in San Francisco.
The job was fine. But she felt trapped.
She didn’t like having to be at her desk from 9-5 each day. Do projects she didn’t like. And earn the same amount no matter how hard she worked.
She wanted out.
Allison wanted to travel, be her own boss, and have no limits on her income.
She knew freelancing was the answer. But she also lived in the most expensive city in the country. She worried that if she started freelancing she wouldn’t be able to pay the bills.

“Freelancing was always in the back of my mind. I didn’t want to be in an office, I wanted to be free. But I was afraid to make the leap…”

“I didn’t want to be another ‘starving freelancer’”
Allison had heard “horror stories” from other freelancers — how they were forced to work for free or deal with clients who didn’t pay.
Even those who had good clients could lose them overnight. So their income could vanish instantly.
She didn’t want to end up like that.
“I know a lot of people who are traveling as freelancers, but they’re broke. I didn’t want to be another ‘starving freelancer.”
Allison began to look for freelance copywriter courses. Something that would help her career get off to a fast start. So she could bypass the early struggles most people have.
But everything she found was about getting clients through job boards.
And based on the stories she heard, that didn’t seem like a good route to take.
“Using Upwork or Craigslist is a lot of effort for little reward.
I wasn’t seeing many success stories from people who used those job boards. But I heard a lot of horror stories about bad clients people got from them.”

“Kevin was a shield from bad clients”
Eventually, one of Allison’s friends recommended Real Free Life.
At first, she was skeptical.
She didn’t know Kevin Rogers or Copy Chief.
But after seeing success stories of Ross and April, she decided it was worth a try.
To her, having a mentor like Kevin meant she could bypass all the struggles other copywriters face early on.
So she joined Real Free Life in May 2016. Her goal was to get a steady flow of work that paid well. So she could quit her job within a few months.

“I was afraid I’d fail…”
One of the first exercises inside Real Free Life was also one of the most helpful for Allison.
It teaches you how to identify and find your “ideal clients.”
Knowing that makes it easier to get on their radar. And makes it easy for people to send you leads that are a good fit.
At first, Allison was afraid to do this.
She thought if she listed her “ideal clients” but didn’t get hired by them then she would be a failure.
But she knew she had to “aim high” to get quality clients.
So she listed them out and posted them to the private Real Free Life forum.
This alone helped her land quality jobs early.
“I listed BulletProof Coffee as one of my ideal clients. Kevin put me in touch with them, and we started working together.”

“Clients didn’t care if I didn’t have samples…”
The next big lesson Allison got was how to “Specialize”.
In Real Free Life, this is called finding your Bat Signal.
It’s a part of copywriting you enjoy and are good at. Having this instantly turns you into an authority in the eyes of potential clients. And again makes it easy for people to send you work.
Allison had experience with split-testing from her old job. So she made “split-testing” her Bat Signal.
She soon discovered that having a Bat Signal helped her get her foot in the door with high-level clients instantly.
She had no trouble getting work — even if it had nothing to do with her specialty.
“People would say “Hey, let’s talk about split-testing.” By the end of
the conversation, I’d say “Well you’re not ready for that but I can help you with other copy.
They didn’t care if I had samples or not. Having a specialty was enough so people wanted to work with me.”

After joining Real Free Life in May, 2016, Allison had a steady stream of clients.
She did about one project per month on the side while still working as a full-time employee.
The work came from referrals from Kevin as well as other Copy Chief members. She also landed gigs through the job boards in the Copy Chief forum.
By the end of 2016, Allison felt it was time to go full-time freelancing.
“Lots of people quit their job too soon. Because I had a mentor and a program I was able to quit my job at the right time.”
When she went to quit, something shocking happened:

Allison left her job in January 2017.
At first, she worried she wouldn’t make a consistent income.
But then she applied to a job opening she found in the Copy Chief job forum.
She didn’t hear anything back.
But in Real Free Life, Kevin taught her that if you don’t hear back, it isn’t personal. It may be that the person is busy.
So Allison followed-up. And wound up getting the job.
“I was still a beginner and knew there were better copywriters than me applying. So I didn’t think I’d get the job.
But I kept following up, and that’s how I got the job. I landed a great retainer. I had other clients, too. So by February, I was consistently making the amount I set out to make.”
“I’m not some starving traveler…”
While this was happening, Allison had an incredible opportunity.
She got a chance to spend a month working in Buenos Aires.
With no boss demanding she stay at her desk, and plenty of money coming in, she said “yes” and joined.
With that, she was living the life she had been dreaming of.
“I was on the balcony overlooking Buenos Aires. The sun was beating down on me, and I thought ‘This is the life I dreamed of for a year and a half.
I’m not some starving traveler. I could eat where I want and have steak every night.
And this wasn’t just two weeks out of the year. This can be my life as long as I want it to be.”

“I lost all my clients at once…”
Allison continued landing work and living a great lifestyle through 2017.
But as the year ended, all her work dried up.
Her retainer client didn’t need her anymore.
And her other major client wasn’t working out anymore.
She turned to the Copy Chief community for help on what to do. And they convinced her to leave that client. Because they knew she could get better work elsewhere.
“I needed support from copywriters who had been through the same thing. And that’s what Copy Chief gave me.
Friends can cheer you up, but people in Copy Chief will get you to that next level.”
Right away, Allison got new leads through Copy Chief.
So she quickly bounced back and her career quickly became better than ever.
She’s working with clients she loves who were immediately drawn to her thanks to her Bat Signal.
Then, she decided to go in a new direction. So Allison spent 2018 creating a new “bat signal” and building up offers around it.
She now specializes in creating Customer Avatars. Again, she has used this Bat Signal to attract top clients. And she’s in the process of turning it into a business.
“I want to make my avatar offer the most badass offer out there. I’m going to take it to the next couple of levels in the next few years.”
