“I was alone…”
After working as a delivery driver, longshoreman, and then salesperson for an online university, Jason Hakes decided to become a copywriter.
His busy work schedule means He devoured books and podcasts to learn the craft of copywriting. And he even got a few one-off jobs from friends.

Jason realized Kevin understood where he was at and knew how to help Jason break into the industry. So Jason joined Copy Chief.
The feedback and support Jason got from the Copy Chief community helped him feel more confident in his copywriting skills. But Jason wanted more. He wanted one-on-one attention and mentorship.

“It eliminates a lot of imposter syndrome…”
As a new copywriter, Jason struggled a lot with “Imposter syndrome.”
He felt like he wasn’t a “real” copywriter yet. And he was afraid people would see him as a fraud.

There were times during the course when Jason doubted himself.
For example, he had a meeting with a potential client. Afterward, he beat himself up over all the things he wished he did differently.

Jason graduated Escape Velocity right as the Coronavirus pandemic started.
Many of the prospects he reached out to had shut down their businesses. So they weren’t looking for copy help. But they were still glad he reached out because they know that once they open up again, they’ll likely need copy. And when that happens, they know they can reach out to Jason.
Jason isn’t worried about getting clients anymore. He now has a portfolio of quality samples, and business owners are responding positively to his cold outreach emails. So he knows it’s only a matter of time until he starts to land jobs.
“I’m not worried because what I learned inside Escape Velocity stacked on top of the support [Escape Velocity students] give each other I know I’ll be able to get work.
I’m getting responses back from prospects who say ‘I can’t do anything with you now but in the future, I’d be happy to.’ When I was prospecting without the help I got from Kevin and Rachel I didn’t get any messages back.”
